New on the menu

The Pass Area dining scene keeps growing, and a few of the newest names are worth a special trip. Here is where to point your appetite this month.

Happy Mediums in Calimesa

The neighborhood eatery that grew from a popular Redlands pop-up now serves breakfast, salads, and sandwiches at 1007 Calimesa Blvd, Ste H, in the Crown Village Mall plaza. A warm, New American-style addition to the Calimesa dining scene and a great stop before or after a hike in the hills above town.

Hot and new on the dinner map

La Popular has climbed Beaumont's hot-and-new lists for Mexican food, joining Pon Pho Noodle (pho), Frijoles Restaurant & Cantina (ceviche, pozole, chilaquiles), and Kasama Restaurant (Filipino-Cantonese fusion) on the downtown corridor. In Banning, Nosotros Cafe remains the Pass Area's first Blue Zones Project restaurant, and Farm 2 Fork Cafe & Bakery (42 W Ramsey St) keeps serving farm-to-table pastries and coffee.

Italian at the outlets & Banning favorites

Birba Ristorante is serving handmade pastas and wood-fired pizzas at Desert Hills Premium Outlets in Cabazon, an easy dinner pairing with outlet shopping. In Banning, Johnny Russo's Italian Restaurant (1335 W Ramsey St, rated 4.6 stars with 400+ reviews) and Consuelo's Home Style Mexican Food (1046 E Ramsey St) remain beloved institutions, while Farm's House Restaurant (6261 Joshua Palmer Wy) and Gramma's Country Kitchen (2868 W Ramsey St) keep the home-style cooking coming.

Concert-night dining at Morongo

Morongo Casino's fall concert series keeps rolling with OneRepublic tonight (Oct 13), Fountains of Wayne (Oct 23), UB40 (Oct 24), The Isley Brothers (Nov 7), Stone Temple Pilots (Nov 21), El Fantasma (Dec 4), and Tyrese (Dec 5). The new Hampton Inn and Home2 Suites hotel on the resort grounds makes a concert night an easy overnight, with upscale dining options like Cielo steakhouse and The Marketplace by Fabio Viviani right on property.

Fall trails & parks worth the drive

October is the best hiking month of the year in the Pass Area: cool mornings, golden light, and trails that are empty on weekdays. These are the routes locals actually walk.

Bogart Regional Park, Cherry Valley

The top hiking spot near Beaumont: the Bogart Park Ridge Trail (3.2 miles, moderate) delivers dramatic ridge views, and the Bogart Park Trail (3.9-mile loop) winds through oak and chaparral. The park also offers camping, equestrian trails, playgrounds, and picnic areas, all managed by the Beaumont-Cherry Valley Recreation and Park District.

Noble Creek Ridge Loop, Beaumont

The Noble Creek Ridge Loop from Horse Camp (5.1 miles, moderate) at Noble Creek Regional Park (390 Oak Valley Pkwy) offers quiet scenery and wide views of the pass. It is one of the closest big-sky hikes to downtown Beaumont.

Wildwood Canyon & the San Gorgonio Wilderness

Wildwood Canyon State Park in Yucaipa offers free entry and a gentle 2.5-mile lollipop loop through oak woodland, open to hikers, mountain bikers, and horses. For a bigger day, the San Gorgonio Wilderness holds 81 miles of trails including the Vivian Creek Trail, the shortest and steepest route to 11,499-foot Mount San Gorgonio. An Adventure Pass is required at some trailheads.

Whitewater Preserve & Big Morongo

Whitewater Preserve, managed by The Wildlands Conservancy, protects 2,246 acres along the year-round Whitewater River at the foot of the San Gorgonio Wilderness, with the 3.75-mile Canyon View Loop climbing to panoramic views. Big Morongo Canyon Preserve in Morongo Valley, free and open dawn to dusk, is one of California's top birding spots with easy trails and observation decks. Both are less than 40 minutes from the pass.

Seasonal things to do right now

From apple orchards to pumpkin patches to mountain foliage, this is the season the Pass Area was made for.

Apple season in Oak Glen

U-pick apple season runs through November at Oak Glen, about 25 minutes north of Beaumont. Los Rios Rancho, Southern California's largest and oldest apple farm (est. 1906), grows 35+ varieties and presses cider on an antique press, and Riley's Farm adds its Legend of Sleepy Hollow evenings through October. The Oak Glen Apple Butter Festival caps the season in late November.

Pumpkin patches & Halloween fun

Banning's month-long Dia de los Muertos Pumpkin Patch is open now, Peltzer Pumpkin Farm and Greenspot Farms in Mentone add hayrides and corn mazes, and the Los Rios Rancho pumpkin patch and corn maze opened September 19. Beaumont's free Trunk or Treat is October 31 (5-8 PM at Beaumont Sports Park), with Calimesa's at Summerwind Park the same evening.

Holiday lights are coming

Christmas Nights at 123 Farm opens November 5 and runs through January 3 (advance tickets required, no door sales). The 33rd Annual Winterfest is December 4 at the Cherry Valley Grange, the Palm Springs Festival of Lights Parade lights up Palm Canyon Drive December 5, and Beaumont's Blizzard Bash and Holiday Light Parade is December 12 on Beaumont Avenue.

Desert & mountain getaways

Modernism Week's fall edition fills Palm Springs October 15-18, Greater Palm Springs Pride is November 6-8, and the WTA Finals serve up November 8-15. Up the mountain, Idyllwild and Big Bear are showing fall color, and Joshua Tree's clear October skies are perfect for stargazing, with the Leave No Trace Spotlight Weekend November 5-7.

Local news & developments

A few things worth knowing about the Pass Area this month, from the ballot to the ballfields.

Beaumont Veterans Parade, November 11

Beaumont is planning a Veterans Parade for Wednesday, November 11, joining the community ceremonies held across Banning, Calimesa, and Cherry Valley to honor all who served. As a U.S. Army veteran, this one means a lot to me. Watch the City of Beaumont events page for the route and start time, and bring the whole family.

Sunset Crossroads goes to voters

On Tuesday, November 3, Banning voters decide Measures U, V, and W on the 533-acre Sunset Crossroads Specific Plan, the proposed commercial and industrial project near I-10 that could add millions of square feet of warehouse space plus retail. The referendum made the ballot after the San Gorgonio Pass Alliance gathered more than 7,000 signatures. Beaumont Unified's $86 million Measure B school bond is on the same ballot.

Sports Park turf & Stewart Park

Beaumont Sports Park unveiled its $4.5 million artificial-turf field upgrade this September, and Stewart Park's revitalization is moving again after the state lifted the construction pause, preserving the city's $2.5 million Phase II grant for walking trails, an inclusive playground, a splash pad, and more.

Road work to plan around

Caltrans I-10 lane closures continue between Beaumont and Calimesa as part of a $146 million pavement rehabilitation and safety project, and Beaumont's street rehabilitation program has mill-and-overlay work on Highland Springs Ave (through Oct 26) and Champions Drive (Nov 20-Dec 1). Allow extra time on those corridors, especially around Trunk or Treat and holiday shopping.
